Some just do what they are told.
But a few look up when engines start
And feel the runway in their heart.

My Bio

I’m Josiah Smucker — a full-time flight instructor and aviator with over a decade of flying experience and a passion for helping pilots pursue true proficiency, not just minimum standards. After starting my instructing career at a local flight school, I eventually transitioned into independent instruction focused on personalized, real-world training.

My background includes mission flying in Guatemala, tailwheel and stick-and-rudder training, spin instruction, instrument proficiency, and aircraft-specific coaching for owners and experienced pilots alike. I believe great instruction goes beyond passing checkrides — it’s about building confidence, judgment, discipline, and a mindset of continual growth.

Outside of aviation, I enjoy hiking, wood carving, playing guitar, and spending time outdoors. I aim to bring a personable and encouraging approach to instruction while maintaining a strong emphasis on professionalism, safety, and mastery in the cockpit.

Whether you're 17 or 71 you will accomplish your flight goals! That's my guarantee

"I had been searching for a CFI to complete Spin Training and earn my Spin Endorsement for my upcoming CFI training. After reaching out to a couple CFI’s with no luck I had come across Josiah from a CFI Directory. Seeing he offered Spin Training in an Aeronca Champ I had also inquired him about finishing up earning my tailwheel endorsement which was something I had been meaning to complete. Josiah got back to me within a few hours and was able to put together a package of flights flying multiple lessons a day over the span of 3 days due to the time crunch I was on, needing to complete this before going out of town for a bit. The lessons were well structured and laid out specific objectives which needed mastery to get signed off. Josiah provided me with great instruction both on the ground with preflight lessons and debriefs, and also in the air while dealing with learning the differences in landing tricycle gear vs. conventional landing gear aircraft. One of our last flights we completed spin training, some of the most fun I’ve had in an airplane. We went beyond just demonstrating intentions spins and Josiah allowed me to role play as the instructor with multiple instances where unintentional spins could occur with a student which was a great learning experience. Overall, I found the entire experience as a positive, improving my stick and rudder skills flying in the Champ. Josiah was a knowledgeable, professional instructor who was incredibly easy to get along with and schedule with. I would recommend pilots at any level to train with Josiah if they are serious about training to mastery beyond minimum standards."
